Steam train with two engines emerges from a tunnel smoking  heavily and passes in front of camera, pulling approx. twenty  freight cars with signs on each car which read “Special train, HOPS, Sunset Route”.  A another locomotive at the back pushes the boxcars. Smoke keeps pouring out of the tunnel after train has gone by.

Wheels a Rolling - A Pageant / Play with music. Probably for Chicago World’s Fair. Slightly surreal as historical pageant is acted out in front of large concrete blocks.

Gag as guard helps woman into coach  showing bloomers -  “ Early 1840’s “ firemen and citizens using water pump as they fear Chicago about to be engulfed by fire - turns out to be smoke from Baldwin built locomotive  The Pioneer. Train passes slowly, waving people. “ 1849 “ and the Gold rush - covered wagons and horses recreate trek West includes death on the trail. “ 1859 “ Wells Fargo coach and horses - pony express - recreation on coach being held up . “ 1861 “  “ Abraham Lincoln”  speaking on leaving Chicago gets into horse and carriage.
01.29.50 American civil war - shots of injured soldiers limping along. Train bringing body of Lincoln moves slowly. “ 1856 “ representation of RR going west - Cowboy and Indian fights. “ 1869 “  Last rail link across America  - Golden spike hammered in as Union Pacific line is completed.
01.33.06 Steam engine and train of the Santa Fe Railway   - refreshment provisions include the “Harvey Girls”  dressed as waitresses sing Beautiful Dreamer . Frontier town cowboys - Can Can girls. Includes many shots of rail industry.
Steam train stops at  station in town, passengers  out, train departs.  Man walks with wheelbarrow at station. Passengers on platform waiting. At station locomotive pulls carriages full of coal marked Ford, men hang on side of carriages.
Platform attendant family (?): man in overalls and cap with two women and child on swing.  Same women and child in front of house with chicken. Locomotive changing track into warehouse.
In workshop train hanging, wheels only visible as workers carry out repairs underneath it. Fixing wheels. Views of machinery. Workers wheeling out wheels from large stock outside into workshop. General views  around station, smoke out of chimney.

Challenge of Change
Deals with social change from 1900 through World War One and after.

Poor farmers family eating outside with 9 children. Offices w/ secretaries, soup kitchens. Official party stands around man signing document at desk. Poor farmers family on doorstep. Car manufacturing. Rural poor family in makeshift house, beds outside/ superimposed title: Unemployment compensation. Labourers shovelling & superimposed title: 8 Hour day. Going Through the Tunnel

Camera on front part of the train tracks forward  and shows cars moving through the switchyard, alongside some freight cars, and into a tunnel.
Outside the tunnel, two people run off the track as the camera approaches. The train stops to let a steam locomotive with three passenger cars through. Signal man on the tracks. Train moves again.
