Documentary: On work of the American Friends Service Committee in Europe since
1917. Members work at the Matson Maternelle de la Marne maternity hospital
in Chalons-sur-Marne, France. English, French and American nurses attend mothers
and babies.
02:00:48 Exterior hospital - two nurses come out holding baby. Exterior shots
hospital which was opened in 1922. Groups of nurses walk in the grounds.
02:01:50 Patient arrives in hansom cab / horse drawn carriage. Pregnant mother
is helped into hospital by nurses. Interior hospital ward. Separate ward for
dependent children who come in with mothers. Nurses play with young children.
Maternity ward, mother in bed is given baby. Patient leaves hospital with
husband and new baby.
02:03:28 Austria - Poverty in Vienna. Families living in shacks.
02:04:10 Rebuilding work / homes - financed by Quaker mission. Settlers working
the land / allotments - raising food which they cannot afford to buy. Tracking
shot of finished new homes on Settlement Street.
02:05:05 Cattle / cows which have been exported thanks to relief mission to
restock farms. Farmer repays mission with milk. Milk in churns transported
by horse drawn cart. Two horses are lovely white horses which were originally
owned by Emperor.
02:05:50 Welfare centre where milk is distributed. Children queue for milk.
02:06:08 Spinnerin au jeux hospital for tubercular children - children, some
walking with canes. Hospital beds brought into open air for children with
TB. Nurse gives children in beds milk to drink.
02:06:40 Mission also helps the working classes - people queuing for handouts.

02:07:16 Women taking needlework to institute, means of supplementing income
after selling all their possessions. Titles explain that often a year’s
pension is insufficient for a weeks food and 600 war victims, many of them
gentlefolk of the old aristocracy receive weekly allotments of food.

Rolling title stresses purpose of film is to show what to do in an emergency
situation where no doctor available. Woman going into final stages of genuine
labour in darkened room w/ overblown romantic music: CU woman grimacing at
contractions; female friend/mother at foot of bed; women grasping hands; dabbing
forehead w/ cold cloth; funny shot of friend sticking two fingers up at father
to indicate contractions, mouthing words to one another due to lack of dialogue;
“many of us are never privileged to witness the birth of a baby”.
01:30:52 Narrator talks through what to do when delivering baby in “emergency
situation”. Father washes hands & forearms. CU mother on bed w/
strangely-shaped bump; cut to vars diagrams of baby inside - vagina, uterus,
umbilical cord etc. labeled - development of baby & nourishment from placenta
- animation of baby starting to push through birth canal.

blankets for baby - lines cardboard box for makeshift crib. [Birth seems to
be taking place in a dingy storeroom from a horror film set.] CU mother grimacing.
VERY GRAPHIC CUs blood coming out of vagina & head of baby beginning to
push through; cutaways to father looking down; father guides baby’s
head out of vagina; CU mother’s face - VO “tell her to pant like
a dog”. Father holds baby up; animation shows how to encourage baby’s
breathing - artificial respiration. Sterilising scissors; father washes hands
again.
091:43:14 Cutting umbilical cord - tied in two places w/ cotton tape. Afterbirth
expelled from vagina. Bloodstained sheets removed & clean pad put over
mother’s vagina. Mother wrapped up & father massages uterus to stop
bleeding. Mother drinks fruit juice.
01:48:06 Father brings baby wrapped in blanket to show mother. VO re caring
for premature babies - CU baby wrapped in blanket, put in padded heated box;
CU baby fed formula from pipette.
01:49:33 Miscarriage - mother on bed, pillow put under feet. Cut back to happy
couple. Summary of main points to remember when delivering baby.

20:17:53 Sailor reading letter as girl’s VO. “I don’t want
to have a baby.” He wads up letter.
20:18:18 Titles.
20:18:36 Guy walking along sandy beach at edge of water, small waves breaking;
he throws sand. He hears their voices talking, he wants her to show him she
loves him. Sits on beach w/ letter. VO “..what are we going to do..?”
20:20:19 Mother: “Oh Mary, how could you have done such a thing? Father
shouts “I’d like to get my hands on that boy, that’s what
I’d like to do”. CU girl crying. Bill talks to himself (seen w/
two look-a-likes), “I can’t figure out how it could happen”
“You call getting a girl pregnant, bad luck?” “He knew when
to stop.” Etc.
20:22:02 CU go-go dancer in bar, dance ends & she walks down; Bill drinking
beer alone, smoking. Another dancer in CU. Bill’s conscience reappears;
ego & id argue. He orders more beer. The ego & id argue over what
Bill is doing. Argue about Bill’s smoking when he knows its bad for
him.
20:25:00 Doctor tells Bill he’s aggrivating his cold by smoking. You’ll
have to knock off till you get the cold cleared up; by then maybe you’ll
kick it. Men in hospital beds w/ smoke induced problems of emphysema, breathing
difficulties, lung cancer & heart disease. Thin patients talking; man
hacking cough. Bill having his lung capacity checked. Men w/ lung problems.
20:26:52 Three guys in bar talking again about smoking. Waitress brings round
of beers; they discuss it & argue about whether to get drunk or not.

he falls on floor. They discuss his obnoxiousness. “You know what the

20:27:55 Doctor in white coat talkingto guy & explains kids drink to act
grown up; too much alcohol makes you act irresponsibly.
20:28:10 Girl at party dips chip & then goes up to others in party outfits.
Guy drinking by himself as rest talk. Guy drinking alone in bar; others drinking
from bottle etc. Hungover guy on bed. Guy walking on street at night almost
drunk, police pull up & turn on lights. He hands policeman bottle, then
they argue & he falls on ground. “He’s become an alcoholic.
20:29:48 Guy smoking a marijuana joint; another heating drug in spoon over
candle, injects into arm.
20:30:26 CU feet in medical waiting room, guy holding head in hands. Man pacing.
Bill & two guys iin bar arguing more about drinking, smoking. “Things
that can affect the future...a person has to live w/ himself first.”
Bill gets up & walks out to talk to someone that can straighten things
out. Dancer keeps dancing as VO from Chaplain or ?? Dancing becomes light
show w/ sex magazines, marquees, faces, band playing. Advertisements (but
no products seen). Strobing;
20:33:39 Officer or chaplain talking to Bill. “Life isn’t like
that...its normal to question yourself...” “It just doesn’t
seem fair...” “I didn’t want to get Mary pregnant...”
“Or does something like... Masturbate? Its not what I would call a completely
satisfactory sexual experience...”
20:35:43 Montage of sailors marching, learning equipment, talking w/ officer;
looking at sex magazine, baseball, art class, dancing in club “enjoying
girls w/o going all the way.” The decision is yours, you can drink too
much, ruin your lungs... Two gay guys, prostitute in bedroom & couple
getting dressed. “Whores & pickups are easy to come buy...VD can
cause serious damage to your body...” Guy looking very serious as doctor

Chaplain: “but look what you’ve done to her life, can you imagine

CU Mary to mother: “...I’m sure Bill will marry me, if I ask him
to?” Dad: “Oh that’s all we need for a son-in-law!”
Mary: “..but I’m not sure if he really loves me.” Dad: “Love’s
you? How could he love you, he only had 3 dates w/ you.” Mom: “Love
really takes getting to know one another...marriage is no place to experiment.”
Father goes on lecturing. Mom suggests they’ll take her to a home for
unwed mothers “...as soon as it starts to show, & you can stay there
till its born.” “...they even see that the baby is put up for
adoption.”
20:40:01 Girl walking w/ suitcase to home. Checking in as “Wendy”,
interviewed. “Nobody knows.” “Not even the baby’s
father?” “I’ve tried...”
20:41:09 VO home w/ mothers-to-be & counsellor; talking, writing letter
& crying. CU baby. CUs 6-month old babies lonely, crying w/ Chaplain VO
talking about “real despair”. “Can you picture your child
here?”
20:42:20 Bill & Chaplain. “You can marry her.” “I’m
not ready...” “Can they make me support both her & the baby?”
Bill: “I kind of like Mary; w/ a little more time I might have gotten
serious.” Chaplain: “...pretty serious.” CU Bill: “But
she was wearing this bikini, & I just couldn’t help myself.”
Chaplain lectures: “...self control is just as important in dating as
it is in everything else. Its even more important...”
20:43:42 Bill showering & shaving as VO of Chaplain: “Of course
when you date, you should never forget as a male you have a basically agressive
instinct. You’re built to pursue the female; the question is how far
do you go.” Bill in bedroom w/ pictures of naked pin-ups on the wall.
“Should you let go of the animal urge for conquest; to go all the way?”
20:44:07 Bill leaves suburban home & gets into Pontiac.
20:44:18 Mary dressing in 1960s mini-dress culotte. “You have got to
realize to that girls also have sex drives...she thinks in terms of a longer
relationship”. Bill rings doorbell, they leave.
20:45:10 Chaplain continues talking to Bill in office. “Now dating different
girls is just the first step...then marriage & children...its what most
men strive for. It can all be shattered in one single action...”
20:45:50 Bill & Mary kissing under blanket on sandy beach at night. Bill:
“...then show me.”
